Our Philosophy

A Place to Be Yourself

Teaching the wonder, spirit and worth of people and the natural world through outdoor pursuits since 1959.

Our Perspective

We are passionate about investing in youth and providing young people with life-changing outdoor experiences. Our expedition-based outdoor school programs and camps provide opportunities for youth to connect with the outdoors, learn about themselves and each other, and test their limits in a safe environment. This learning creates a ripple effect—youth return to their communities empowered to create positive changes.

Our youth programs are grounded from SPL’s six core values, known as the Strathcona Circle.

  • More with Less
  • Stewardship
  • Challenge by Choice
  • Living on the Edge
  • Generosity of Spirit
  • Happy Warrior

Instructors

SPL instructors love the outdoors and have a passion to teach and share their stoke for adventure. They are excellent role models, caring leaders, and have the ability to meet the unique needs of each group. SPL takes pride in our experienced outdoor educators with a high level of technical skills and group facilitation techniques.

A diverse team, with a breadth of skills, schooling, and lived-experience that adds depth and individuality to our programs. Instructors often come to SPL with degrees or diplomas in outdoor education or recreation, adventure guiding certifications, and some are graduates of our own COLT outdoor leadership semester program. Their excitement for outdoor education is infectious!

Risk Management

The programs we offer at Strathcona Park Lodge & Outdoor Education Centre contain an element of risk. The safety of our participants and managing risk is our top priority.

Activities are carefully designed and facilitated to pose appropriate challenges for participants, to further learning outcomes, develop character, and to contribute to feelings of accomplishment.

As an accredited member of the British Columbia Camps Association we uphold extensive safety standards.

Food & Dining

We work closely with local farmers and our other suppliers to source products that meet our requirements for nutritious, sustainable and ethical food. Our kitchen is allergy aware and we do not serve peanuts or tree nuts. We always have a vegetarian option and can cater to vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free diets or those with restrictions for religious reasons.

On trips away from the lodge, meals are prepared by the group under supervision of the instructor. These meals tend to be simple and hearty and are usually cooked over a campfire or camp stove. Ingredients are prepared by the kitchen staff ahead of time and are appropriate for the excursion.

Please let us know if you have special dietary needs on your medical form.

I have nothing but respect for what SPL does. Our kids have grown, have blossomed, have connected to themselves and nature in ways that would be impossible at home.
